Gender as a Culturally Constructed Category Gender: describes the sets of culturally prescribed behaviors, actions and functions assigned to a particular sex Sex: refers to the biological or “chromosomal’ physical identity which separates males from females In addition to biology, gender determined by: How the body is held; The tone of voice; The choice of vocabulary; Facial expressions; Dress; Physical space

Contested Tradition A tradition whose meaning or value or significance is debated by different stakeholders, each of whom has a particular “stake” --an economic, political, ideological rationale for, and investment in, his/her position Terms of the Debate: The protest rhetorically serves to present tradition as a "problem" in the ethical modernization of society. Clash becomes a moral drama about the role of “tradition” in “modern society.
