EG-260 @Avril Slone 2007 1 of 2 EG-260 Dynamics I - Example Sheet 4 Forced single degree of freedom systems 1. A spring-damper-mass system is excited by an harmonically varying force. At resonance, the amplitude was measured as 0.58 mm, and at 0.8 of the resonant frequency, the measured amplitude was 0.46 mm. Determine the damping ratio, ζ . (Assume the effect of damping is negligible away from resonance). 2. Determine the solution for the displacement of an undamped spring-mass system when a force () 0 sin ft ω+φ acts on the mass with initial zero displacement and velocity (i.e. at t = 0 ). 3. A 20 kg mass is supported by a damped spring of stiffness 9 kN/m and damping constant 200 kg/s. The mass is excited by a harmonically varying force of ± 50 N applied vertically, at a frequency of 2.5 Hz. Determine the amplitude and phase of the steady state motion. 4. Determine the steady state amplitude and phase angle for the vibration system in the diagram shown right.
