Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery reduces the size of the stomach and can cause malabsorption of nutrients, leading to weight loss according to webmd.com. Researchers wanted to test the claim that body mass index (BMI) reduction is significantly greater than zero ten months after surgery. They selected 110 patients who elected to have laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery and measured their BMI prior to surgery. After 10 months they again measured the BMI. The mean reduction in BMI in the 110 patients was found to be 12.61 with a standard deviation of 4.90. (Use MINITAB where appropriate) Question: What type of experimental design is this? Why? This matched paired design because the block of size two is a person and the treatments are BMI before and after surgery.
