BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES 101-002 DR. MARK SANDERS WINTER QUARTER 2010 INSTRUCTOR Dr. Mark Sanders 3033A Sciences Laboratory Building (SLB) 752-7096 [email protected] Office hours are Mondays 1:00-2:30 and Wednesdays 2:00-3:00 TEACHING ASSISTANTS Grayson Jaggers Kasia Koscielska [email protected] [email protected] TEXTBOOK AND SUPPLEMENT The required textbook for the course is the 9 th edition of An Introduction to Genetic Analysis by Griffiths et al. There is a useful and informative CD ROM accompanying both the textbook that is available with new copies, although you may also find it with some used copies of the text. If you have an earlier edition of this book or another genetics textbook you would like to use, check with the instructor for approval. If you use another book, however, you will be responsible for identifying the reading, chapter problems, etc. appropriate to each lecture topic. There are two optional supplements for the course. One is the Solutions Manual for An Introduction to Genetic Analysis by Fixsen and Lavett. The solution manual contains a complete set of answers and explanations for end of chapter problems. The other item is a new publication titled How to Solve Genetics Problems by Harry Nickla. From its title it should be evident that this manual is geared toward learning how to solve genetics problems. It gives guidance to both understanding what is asked and how to answer in all areas covered by the course. The publisher also maintains a web site at www.whfreeman.com that has links to a large number of supplementary illustrations and explanations tied to chapters of the textbook. GRADING
