AVI497/PSYCH 496 Spring 2010 HW#3 Name:________ Jae Choi ____________ 1) What is hypoxia? State of oxygen deficiency in the body’s tissues, sufficient enough to cause impairment of functions pertinent to flight. 2) What are the four types of hypoxia? Define each type. Stagnant- result of transportation problems, consequence of a reduction in blood flow through the tissues. Cases may involve decompression sickness, restricted blood flow, g-forces and temperatures. Hypoxic Hypoxia- result of ventilation and diffusion problems, in other words a reduction in oxygen pressure in the blood. Cases maybe due to ascent to altitude, lung disease, & cabin decompression. Hypemic Hypoxia- Transportation Problem, The consequence of a reduction in the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood. Cases maybe due to anemia, sulfa type drugs, and dehydration. Histotoxic Hypoxia- Utilization Problem, The result of an interference with the ability of the tissues to utilize a normal oxygen supply for oxidative processes. Cases maybe due to
