About vi Editor Vi is an editor and is used to create, view and modify text files. Vi is case sensitive vi is a visual editor - immediately displays the changes you make vi is a screen editor - displays text one screen at a time Vi operates in three modes command mode insert mode, and last line mode In Command Mode: every letter or character you type is a vi command that causes some action to occur what you type does not echo In Insert Mode: every letter you type is inserted into the workspace as part of your text file what you type does echo In Last Line Mode By typing the colon (:) this puts vi in Last Line Mode. The colon moves the cursor to the bottom line of the screen , where you enter th rest of the command. NOTE : Important difference between Command Mode and Last Line Mode is that when you give a command in Command Mode you do not have to terminate the command with the RETURN, however, you must terminate all Last Line Mode commands with a RETURN (ESC also works). Press ESC to end Insert Mode and go to Command Mode
