Unformatted text preview: 1 Peripherals 2 Interfaces Notebooks PDAs Printers 3 I/O Interfaces (Ports) The adapter interface is a way to connect one piece of hardware to another PS/2 Serial Ports USB Parallel Ports use a DB25-pin, female connector DB-9-male DB25 - male VGA port 4 Serial Ports The asynchronous serial interface is designed as a system-to- system/device communications port. Asynchronous means that no synchronization (clocking signal) is used for the timing of data transfer. Serial means that data is sent over a single wire, one bit after another. Serial transfer can be achieved with as few as two wires one for each direction (send and receive). 5 UART Chips Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter Serial transmission uses the Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter (UART) chip. It converts PC native parallel data into serial and serial back into parallel format. A device breaks apart each byte into its component bits and then restores them to 8 bit mode. The difference between UART chips is speed. Current UART chip: 16550A High speed (16-byte FIFO (first in, first out) buffering to eliminate data overrun) 6 High-Speed Serial Port Cards If running RS-232 devices at speeds above 115Kbps (maximum speed of the 16550 UARTs and equivalents), add add-on cards using one of the 16650, 16650, or 16750 UARTs with higher rated speeds. To get the full-speed benefit of an external ISDN modem (terminal adapter), your serial port must be capable of going at least 230Kbps . ISDN - Integrated Services Digital Network) 7 Onboard Serial Ports The Super I/O chip replaced separate UART chips. This chip normally provides for two serial port UARTs, a multimode parallel port, floppy controller, keyboard controller, and sometimes the CMOS memory. 8 Serial Port Configuration Each time a character is received by a serial port, it has to get the attention of the computer by raising an Interrupt Request Line (IRQ)....
