One of the hardest things is deciding where the protoderm ends and the dermal tissue begins—it’s not as if there’s a line drawn for you to separate the two. What you need to look for to differentiate tissues from the meristems that produce them are DIFFERENT CELL TYPES. For example, you’ll know you’re looking at true epidermis instead of protoderm if you’re seeing things like root hairs or trichomes—some variation in the types of cells present, that shows those cells have indeed matured.
