3 VC divisions Anticlinal = new cells side-to-side; important for making circumference of the vascular cambium increase as necessary. As the VC puts down new xylem toward the inside of the stem, it pushes itself outward, and would be broken up by the increased girth if it did not create extra cells in its own circumference to fill in the gaps. Periclinal = new cell in/out; important for new secondary xylem and phloem

4 Two cell types found in the VC. Note their orientation, which helps you determine what cells they’re generating. It also helps that ray initials are called, well, ray initials! Associate the fusiform initials with the creation of cells in the axial system, and ray initials with creation of cells in the ray system.
