BIOL 1010 FW08 Lecture outline - scientific credibility and the complexity of life Is evolution a scientifically controversial idea? No. What about Intelligent Design (I.D.)? Is it a credible scientific alternative to evolutionary theory to explain the current complexity in structure and function of life? The Scientific Method: - uses a hypothetico-deductive model based on multiple observations - is testable - is iterative I.D. has none of these attributes Kitzmiller vs Dover Area School District (2005) - Intelligent Design is religion, not science i) No experiments can be run ii) No hypotheses can be generated iii) No predictions can be made - from the court transcripts, the “proposed mechanism” for I.D.: “…what [intelligent design] does say is, … , at some point in the pathway, intelligence was involved.”; in other words, the mechanism of intelligent design is that intelligence was involved in design… so, other than a scientific-sounding name, Intelligent Design has no scientific qualities Nonetheless, let us examine the “scientific basis” of I.D., according to its proponents. The background rationale: The world is very complex, hence, it must have had a designer who had intelligence. - this is known in philosophy as an “argument from personal incredulity” – it is not a
