Unformatted text preview: ERG2020A (Fall 2007) Tutorial 11: Introduction to Computer Architecture TANG Wai-Chung, Matthew Department of Computer Science and Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong November 27, 2007 Matthew (CSE CUHK) ERG2020A Tutorial 11 November 27, 2007 1 / 20 Content Basic component and structure of a computer. How a CPU works? Datapath for our simplified CPU. Instruction & its format. Writing assemble program. Control signals and control unit. Timer and CPU timing. Instruction execution. Matthew (CSE CUHK) ERG2020A Tutorial 11 November 27, 2007 2 / 20 What is a Computer? Let us recall some features of a computer (digital system). Execute user programs (Java programs!). Carry out simple / complicated calculations (C = A + B). Input and outputs. Clock frequency (33 MHz? 3 GHz?). ? Despite nowadays computer is very powerful, the core of the computer, central processing unit (CPU), is much simpler than you can imagine. Matthew (CSE CUHK) ERG2020A Tutorial 11 November 27, 2007 3 / 20 Basic Components of a Central Process Unit (CPU) ALU - handle arithmetic / logic calculation. Memory - store programs and calculation results. Registers - temporary data storage, elementary operations (count, shift, etc). Control Unit - generation of control signals to other components. Buses - data flow channels. Clock generators - Various clock signals to synchronize different components. Matthew (CSE CUHK) ERG2020A Tutorial 11 November 27, 2007 4 / 20 CPU in Work In most digital systems, we partition the system in two types of modules: a datapath and a control unit...
