BIPN 102- Lec 2 We finished previous lecture, lungs full of elastic fibers in interstitial space, fibers secreted by cells in the lungs. Made up of elastin and some collagen (not elastic) Elastic fibers in a network similar to pantyhose. Causes lung to have tendency to recoil. There is a force tending to minimize vol of lungs, ribs are elastic and like bows, they want to expand and come out. This is an opposing force. Pull the plurel membrane, parital pleural outward and visceral pleural (attached to the lung) inward. Law: boyles law, states that the product of pressure and volume is a constant. If we change the pressure, if we inc pressure, dec vol. vice versa. Gas law: product of pressure and volume at constant pressure = nrt. Pressure is giving by the hitting of the molecules against the walls of container. In gases, pressure is a measure of concentration. Pressure is given for a given number of molecules, given by ratio of vol of content over vol of container. Flow of fluids in cylindrical tubes. Flow of air. If you know ohms law, you know all flow/flux laws Driving force, movement of fluid/air. Components of resistance changes. Inc radius we increase the flow. Flow=r 4 more viscous fluid, more resistance interpleurel: 3mmHg below atmospheric if air is allowed to enter interplurel space, neumal throrax. Lungs spring out, lung recoils and collapse. The lung wont be able to ventilate. How do we generate a pressure gradient that will move air in and out of lungs. Normally,
