4/8/10 BIPN 144 2 types of signals: Signals (outside of cell) Transcription factors (inside of cell -> Nucleus) Morphogens: Present in graded fashion Elicit distinct responses (at least 2) at diff concentrations Morphogen are usually signals: They are produced in one set of cells and diffused into a region that does not produce that factor. I. a. transcription factor DORSAL i. High levels turn on SNAIL and TWIST ii. Low levels turn on Brk, Sog, AS-C iii. No levels: Dpp iv. *Rho- not DORSAL dependent b. VENTRAL: i. one transcription factor TWIST – turns on mesoderm genes

ii. SNAIL turns off neural genes 1. What would happen if mutation destroys mesoderm : no mesorderm 2. In SNAIL mutant- no mesoderm c. Middle layer i. AS-C- turns on neuronal gene ii. Brk- turns off Dpp iii. Sog binds to Dpp to stop Dpp from blocking neural genes 1. Mutant that lacks AS-C- no neural genes d. Dorsal layer i. Dpp turns on non neural genes ii. Turns off neural genes
