Brooks Ross History 2002 December 4, 2009 How Communism fell so abruptly according to Slavenka Drakulic After reading this book, I still cannot imagine coming into such a harsh world. Many Americans don’t absorb how lucky they are until they experience a drastic society that Slavenka Drakulic lived in. Eastern Europe was experiencing massive failures from a social structure and political ideology called Communism. This modern public movement created a classless society where all goods are publicly owned. Drakulic writes a non- fiction account of her life under communism. As a younger woman during the period, she tends to see more problems effecting women. Slavenka Drakulic’s explains why Communism fell so abruptly and completely in her book, How We Survived Communism and Even Laughed , through the massive shortage of supplies that Eastern Europe’s young generations were facing. Communism fell so abruptly and completely through its unpopularity and the growing uncomfortable conditions the people in the society were experiencing. Drakulic’s first person accounts with the troubles of communism explain how communism turned from a method of government into a “state of mind.” Drakulic writes “It was the most perfect system among one party states, set up to internalize guilt, blame, failure or fear, to teach you how you yourself should sensor your thoughts and deeds and, at the same time, to make you 1
