Yet, in the space of these years, the cinematic art achieved new heights and for expressionism’s influence, almost made Germany the equal of Hollywood. With the end of the First World War in sight, Germany was seriously lacking in its domestic production, declining to a state of depression. Allied countries were creating anti-German propaganda films, so in effort to help Germany’s image Germans established the Universum Film Aktiengesellschaft, more commonly known as the UFA. Soon after, the commander in chief of the German army ordered that all production companies merge into one unit. They put together a team of the best producers, directors, and writers. By the 1920’s the German film industry was able to compete commercially with Hollywood- even in America!
