The “Phony War”: -First winter, troops gathered but no real war -Real war exploded in 1940 when Germany attacked northern countries b. Miracle of Dunkirk: -German forces then poured into France -British trapped by Nazis by English Channel, they sent Navy to save British troops c. France Falls: -Italy attacked France from south and Germany from north -France fell, German made a puppet state d. Africa and the Balkans: -Axis pushed into North Africa -Germans successful, Italy also triumphed -Guerrilla warfare hurt Italy though e. The Technology of Modern Warfare: -Air power was prominent in WWI -Radar and sonar, more deadly bombs, etc… II. The Battle of Britain and the Blitz a. The London Blitz: -Germans bombarded London during the night -15,000 dead and buildings destroyed -London did not break under the blitz b. Failure of the Blitz: -British morale not destroyed -British more determined -Operation Sea Lion was a failure, Hitler turned to Russia instead
