Rise and Fall of the Welfare State: -More benefits for people, cost lots in taxes however -Late 1970’s economy hit hard times. -People turned to the Conservative party; Margaret Thatcher led and became prime minister -Tony Blair became prime minister in 1997 b. A New World Role: -Many British colonies gained independence, some joined Commonwealth of Nations -U.S.A took over global dominance from Britain -Many British fear the power of the growing EU, they defended the pound c. Northern Ireland: -Disagreements with Protestant and Catholics in Ireland -Violence escalated; Britain sent in troops, this angered many -Peace talks held on and off, unstable II. France: Revival and Prosperity a. De Gaulle: -de Gaulle became president, gave up some colonies -de Gaulle worked to make France a dominant country -Youth revolts, de Gaulle left, but had made France important b. Economic Revival: -France gave benefits to people also
