Vietnam Divided: -Struggle for Vietnam began in the Cold War -North Vietnam and South Vietnam were divided by government ideology -Cambodia and Laos gained independence -U.S was cautious of the communism in Northern Vietnam, wary. b. American Involvement: -North tried to overthrow South -American troops brought in, could not defeat communists though -Anti-American hate grew -Communists united country, ceasefire happened c. The Communist Victory: -South had unpopular leaders -Guerrillas fought well in their terrain d. Vietnam Today: -Harsh rule on the south, people fled, people died -Vietnam had to be rebuilt -America-led embargo -Very poor, even though America reopened its doors to Vietnam e. Tragedy in Cambodia: -War spilled into Cambodia, Khmer Rouge took over -Reign of terror unleashed -Vietnam invaded Cambodia and occupied it -Khmer Rouge struggle and retreated II. Challenges for the Philippines
