2 o Element Displacements There are 2 element displacements, one at each node, 1 u and 2 u . The finite element method is based on the stiffness method. It is also based on strain-energy. Therefore it is what we call a displacement based method .
3 How? We will use the Rayleigh-Ritz method to approximate the element displacement field,   0 ux . Solve for constants o Element Equilibrium Use strain energy to calculate the stiffness matrix k   for the element.
