Born in Miami, went to Florida state. Went to New York, played violin and went to  Juilliard. Won the Pulitzer prize in 1983. Her “big break” Went from being an usher at Carnegie Hall, to being the first to occupy the  position of Composer’s Chair. Zwilich bases her concerto Grosso 1985 on Baroque ideas such as 1. Regular rhythmic pulse 2. Pedal point 3. Walking bass 4.harpsichord 5 .uses a melody of Handel’s Add things such as  1. Twisting chromaticism 2.dissonant harmony 3. insistent pounding style of playing
