Homework: Week 4 Sernau writes "war is organized brutality, only glorious from a distance, always ugly up close." Discuss what this means and illustrate your points using two examples given in the chapter. Sernau writes “war is organized brutality, only glorious from a distance, always ugly up close.” Our soldiers are currently experiencing this unfortunate truth with the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. The military recruits proud Americans who are willing and able to fight for our country, our allies, and ultimately our freedom. This pride is a wonderful unification of our nation that allows us to feel good about what we are doing to stop these opposing forces. Our military members ready themselves for battle through intense training and mental preparation and they are instilled with a sense of “purpose, honor, heroism, and even passion” (Sernau, 2009). It isn’t until they arrive in Afghanistan or Iraq that the image of the war becomes real. They are finally able to see up close and in person the true impact of our actions.
