30kya, humans occupy entire world Earlier Homo species disappear from the world Where do humans exist at 30 kya? Multiregional hypothesis (Milford Wolpoff) Before genetics, a dispersal out of Africa and then migration from different parts of the world and anatomically modern people evolved from other human species Expect humans from a given area to be more similar to each other than other people in the world Replacement Model (Richard Klein) Later dispersal of humans that spread rapidly to different parts of the world People would be more similar to each other and the most genetically diverse would be in Africa Where did anatomically modern humans descend from? Humans differ in only 1% of nucleotides, but the genes are what matter, most nucleotides are non coding DNA Humans are more similar than other animals Humans are less similar within a geographic region Using this we can compute the amount of similarity How can genetics tell us the answer? Descent from about 10,000 people
