Kelsey White Soc 102, Section 2 Paper #3 27 February 2007 Homophobia is the Problem Homophobia is defined as fear of and hate toward homosexuality and homosexuals. Homosexuality is very prevalent in our society and is not going to disappear, so homophobia is a major social problem in our society. Homophobia is a lot like racism and sexism, which have both been very serious problems in our culture. All of these result in intolerance, and putting a group of people “below” you, and they have very damaging effects on both individuals and the society in general. But unlike with racism and sexism, slurs are still acceptable today and heard all the time. Racial slurs are no longer acceptable in our society, but gay slurs like “faggot” are still used frequently. The use of these slurs and practicing intolerance towards homosexuals can be very damaging actions of homophobia. Homophobia is a social problem because homophobic people act out irrationally towards homosexuals and cause a lot of damage. Hate crimes happen all over the United
