OCR Level 3 Nationals in Business 1 Unit 14: E-business (LEVEL 3) Learning outcomes By completing this unit, candidates will develop the knowledge, understanding and skills associated with the development of e-business, from the point of view of a business becoming involved with internet centred e-commerce activities. Candidates will produce evidence to meet the unit assessment objectives in order to show that they understand: the opportunities that e-business/e-commerce provides to business the advantages and disadvantages for business of developing e-commerce strategies how to reduce the risk factors associated with taking business on-line how to devise an e-business/e-commerce strategy. Assessment objectives Knowledge, understanding and skills 1 Describe how e- commerce solutions can be used by businesses Use of e-commerce solutions: marketing and promotion purposes interaction with customers online ordering/reservation transaction handling payment/order tracking 2 Explain the advantages and disadvantages for businesses and consumers of developing e- commerce strategies Advantages for business organisations: global market access reduce the need for sales premises open for business at all hours image and fashion influenced control of message/content central storage and distribution Disadvantages for business organisations: financial implications (developmental, maintenance, ongoing costs) expense and expertise of effective web designers required need to update information regularly reliance on a host Internet Service Provider (ISP) required changes in business practise training and development expense Advantages for customers: information available at all times (includes manuals, guides, instructions, guidance) easy to compare prices, products, etc. across a number of suppliers quickly Disadvantages for customers: purchasing the product unseen lack of personal contact with sales persons can make negotiation difficult (continued overleaf)
