Kelsey White Soc 102 Section 2 Paper #5 April 15, 2007 Child Abuse One of the most disturbing things I have ever studied in my entire life is child abuse. This is occurring in our country every day, and affects many people in different way. Our textbook defines child abuse as “distinctive acts of violence and nonviolence and acts of omission and commission that place children at risk”. This is a very broad definition. Child abuse includes the obvious physical abuse, such as punching a child, sexual abuse, neglect, and verbal abuse. Many people don’t realize all these things constitute abuse. In fact, many books and videos meant to teach people about the issue of child abuse completely leave out verbal abuse. I believe this is an extremely large part of the abuse taking place today though, so I am including it in my definition. Verbal abuse can include harassment, telling a child that they are stupid or fat, or anything that psychologically harms a child. Child abuse is a huge social problem in the United States,
