Summary Communication makes it possible to share ideas and feelings with other people. Most communication involves more than just sharing meanings. Usually it has a direct effect on the relationships between the people involved. Communication channels are the media or devices by which messages move. All communication channels involve the basic senses—sight, hearing or touch—at some stage. The effective sender thinks about who is receiving the message, why it should be shared and how best to share it. This means that messages need to be planned. The meaning understood by the receiver is seldom exactly the same as the one in the sender’s mind. Feedback helps to indicate how accurate the level of understanding really is. Consequently, two-way communication is far more effective than one-way communication because it allows feedback between both parties and completes the communication process.
