Summary Conflict occurs as a result of poor communication when two or more people are attempting to have differing needs met, resulting in discomfort and negative reactions. Conflicting expectations, misunderstanding, aggression and uncertainty play a role in the occurrence of conflict. The signs range from discomfort and impaired work performance on the part of individuals through to lowered morale and industrial disputes at the organisational level. Conflict can escalate through several stages resulting in a full-blown crisis. The longer a conflict is allowed to develop, the harder it is to identify the real problem and deal with the conflict effectively. The behaviour of individuals, as well as factors in the environment, influence the development of conflict. People’s needs, self- concept, past experiences of conflicts, and health affect their performance in a conflict situation. Many people find it hard to manage conflict situations.
