Ruz-Mora 1 Jorge Ruz-Mora Jill Bergkamp ENC 1102 26 February 2010 Filling the Emptiness When thinking about the death of a popular person the images that are projected are those of millions of mourners in a line trying to pay tribute to their fallen idol. During the upcoming weeks after the death, almost all that it is heard on the news and radio are facts about the life of that person that died. For instance, Steve Irwin's death was mourned by many people around the world that did not know him personally. In Diana Taylor's essay "False Identifications: Minority Populations Mourn Diana" she explains how minorities mourned Princess Diana even though they did not know her. In today's society mourning the death of an international figure is heavily influenced by the image that the media portraits of that celebrity. Laypeople who are influenced by the media have a false sense of self, and at the same time a false sense of unity because they conform with the way the media is telling the general public to mourn. Diana Taylor says in her essay that, "The exclusive, well-behaved public of dignitaries and movie stars inside the Abbey, the charged "popular" audience on the meadows outside, the two billion people watching each other watching around the world" (229). Similar to Princess Diana's funeral, many people went to the Australia Zoo to show their respects to the Crocodile Hunter, while others just watched from their homes. The way that the media aired both funerals it seemed like they wanted the audience that was watching to be sad because they were focusing on the dark and sad aspects of the ceremony. In addition,
