   Ruz-Mora 1 Jorge Ruz-Mora Monica Sedore ENC 1101 10 September 2009 Genetic Engineering and its Consequences There are certain ethics that need to be followed in order to manipulate genes. In his essay "Ethics and the New Genetics", the Dalai Lama states some of the uses of the manipulation of genes that benefit humanity as a whole. Genetic engineering is morally correct if it is used to cure a person with a genetic disorder, like Down Syndrome, Turner Syndrome, Huntington's disease, and many more. Genetic engineering should not be allowed to be used for the sole purpose of creating babies with the genetic traits that the parents want their babies to have, like blue eyes, blond hair, straight hair, etcetera. In order for the human race to keep evolving and surviving, genetic manipulation can only be used to benefit the human race as a whole, not just one individual. In his essay, the Dalai Lama argues that there are certain ethics that need to be followed in order to manipulate genes. The Dalai Lama argues that " When such technologies are used for medical reasons-as in the curing of a particular genetic deficiency- one can deeply sympathize"(Dalai Lama 51); one of the only ways that the manipulation of genes is morally correct is when it is used to cure people that have genetic disorders. If we have developed this technology, it is only fair for it to be used to help those who really need it. By doing this all the people that have or will have genetic disorders will live a happy life like everybody else. Like the

   Ruz-Mora 2 Dalai Lama said "-above all-the need to ensure that we hold compassion as the key motivation for all our endeavors"(Dalai Lama 55), this is the only way that we will all live happy in this world. If we feel compassionate for human beings that have genetic diseases, and we try to help them, then we will all grow as one. Dalai Lama also says that " the fundamental disposition- indeed the right- to seek happiness and overcome suffering"(Dalai Lama 51). People that have genetic diseases have the right like any other human being to be happy and to stop their suffering
