Spring 2010 -  Ç G IE398 - lecture 6 3 We can distinguish between three  dimensions, or  aspects of complexity: 1. technical complexity e.g. pickup and delivery vehicle scheduling introduces high degree  of technical complexity 1.probabilistic complexity   ie. uncertainty e.g. the same problem situation would involve high probabilistic  complexity, or uncertainty, if demands are not known in advance 1. purposive complexity  ie. diversity of interests  and values e.g. screening for breast cancer would involve high purposive  complexity since there will be conflicting objectives another example: greenhouse gases causing global warming: high degree of  complexity  in all three aspects

Figure 1 shows the 3-dimensional  space of  problem situations three zones   Z1 Z2   and   Z3  are shown, enclosed  by thick-gray boundary lines the relative volumes of these zones  do not  indicate the level of complexity of the problem  situation for example a situation that falls into Z3 can  involve a degree of probabilistic complexity as  high as that of a situation that falls into Z1 the volume each zone covers indicates  the type  of systems thinking  that is more suitable for the  problem situation of interest Spring 2010 -  Ç G IE398 - lecture 6 4
