March 5, 2010 IE 398 Systems Thinking Spring 2010 Recitation 1 Recall the characteristics of the reductionist approach and the expansionist approach explained in “Our Changing Concept of the World”, Russell Ackoff, 1981. Consider the assignment 4 of your “IE 323 – Production and Service Operations Planning I” course in the previous semester. In this assignment, you were asked to make demand forecasts for a potential facility of XYZ hotel chains in Antalya, Turkey and to investigate the appropriateness of this investment decision according to company’s target. Which features of the assignment indicate that the assignment has a reductionist point of view? Which points of the situation are disregarded when you “look for solutions from within” ie. use a reductionist approach? How would you approach this situation if you “look for solutions from without” ie. use an expansionist approach?
