The MPS is broken down into a detailed schedule of production/purchase for each of the components that comprises an end item. MRP is the means by which this is accomplished. MRP is then a basic tool for performing the detailed material planning function in the manufacture of component parts and their assembly into end items. IE 324 - April 14, 2010 Lecture Notes on MRP - Part I 4 Objective of MRP To determine the requirements for each component in each time bucket and provide the right components at the right time (no earlier and no later) to meet the schedules for completed products. time bucket : the duration of a specified period. We merge (mix) all the requirements for the same component. This is the reason for calling it a bucket (=kova). Then these requirements are used to generate shop floor schedules and requirements for raw materials and purchased components. IE 324 - April 14, 2010 Lecture Notes on MRP - Part I 5 I ndependent Demand finished products Dependent Demand demand for items that are sub-assemblies, parts or raw materials to be used in the production of finished products The demand for one item is related to the demand for another item. Given a quantity for the end item, the demand for all parts and components can be calculated. I t makes no sense to independently forecast dependent demands.
