Statics:The Next Generation (2nd Ed.) Mehta, Danielson & Berg Lecture Notes for Sections 4.1-4.4 MOMENT OF A FORCE - SCALAR FORMULATION In the 2-D case, the magnitude of the moment is M o = F d We can determine the direction of rotation by imagining the body pinned at O and deciding which way the body would rotate because of the force. MOMENT OF A FORCE – Arbitrary Direction F x y d O x y O F F x F y M O = M O (F Y )+ M O (F X ). Note the signs of the two moments! F Y and F X should be applied at the same point as F. The tails or the arrowheads of F Y and F X should be at the same point and in the line of action of the force F . Problem 4.5 Determine the magnitude and directional sense of the resultant moment of the forces at A and B about point P . Problem 4.6 Determine the magnitude of the force F that should be applied at the end of the lever such that this force creates a clockwise moment 15 N.m about point O when θ =30 o .

Statics:The Next Generation (2nd Ed.) Mehta, Danielson & Berg Lecture Notes for Sections 4.1-4.4 Problem 4.9 Determine the magnitude and directional sense of the moment of the forces about point P . Problem 4.10 Determine the moment of the force about point O . Problem 4.17 The Snorkel Co. produces the articulating boom platform that can support a weight of 550 lb. If the boom is in the position shown, determine the moment of this force about points A , B , and C . Problem 4.29 If the resultant moment about point A is 4800 N.m clockwise, determine the magnitude of F 3 if F 1 =300 N and F 2 =400 N.
