Elie Jermanos Mrs. Rosenchein ESL 33B Monday, October 12, 2009 Differences in Values and Assumptions The differences in values between countries are numerous. People in the United States have different assumption than people in the Middle East. Individuals who grow up in the same community share the same values and assumptions. The major differences in values and assumptions between the United States and the Middle East are Time, Privacy and individualism. Time is a major difference in values and assumptions when comparing the United States and the Middle East. Americans are very well organized and use their time wisely. Also, being on time is a huge sign of respect for Americans. Gary Althens compares the importance of time to resources; as Althens notes “ For Americans, time is a resource that, like water or coal, can be used well or poorly”. On the other hand, time for people in the Middle East doesn’t obtain as much respect as it should. People would rather be late to an appointment than arriving early and
