Elie A. Jermanos Dr. Melnarik English 1A Thursday, February 18, 2010 Disney goes to war The Ultimate American victory in World War II would not have been possible without its home support. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, it became clear that it was only a matter of few hours before the United Sates officially joins the war. Soon after the war started, every American was asked to help. Food and supplies were rationalized, as families were limited to the amount of goods they could buy. Most men were drafted to the Military, and women entered the workforce in large numbers to cover the shortage of men. Although a huge number of men were drafted to the military, some stayed home promoting the war efforts in a different way. Disney studios dedicated over ninety percent of its facilities and employees to help the war effort. In the early years of war, Disney produced a series of thirty two morale boosting films today known as: “The treasures of Walt Disney: On the front lines”. It also created thousands of cartoons and emblems to the military. Disney’s films and drawings helped encourage Americans to support the war efforts; it also raised the self-esteem and trained soldiers fighting abroad. ( www.ohmynews.com While the war expense acquired most of America’s budget, the government was enforcing tax laws to catch up with the war demands. “The income tax” film was one of the “On the front lines” films which Disney created to help the war efforts. American citizens, reminding them of their taxes due dates. In the early years of war when this film was created, many Americans did not pay their taxes on time; in addition the taxes in 1941 were higher than before due to the war expenses. The film starts by showing a typical American worker on his payday counting his pay with two personalities; the “thrifty” and the “spend thrift”. The first personality advises him to save some of his money to meet his taxes due dates; but the other encourages him to have fun and spend it all. After debating with both personalities, Donald Duck who is representing the American worker is shown alone thinking while the narrator says: “Now what are you going to do? Spend for the axis? Or save for taxes? … Just remember, every dollar you spend for something you don’t need is a dollar spent to help the axis.” During the debate he is asked to think about American soldiers abroad, and how their success is based on our efforts and support. Then the film is concluded with how a bunch of IRS applications submitted together can make a huge difference running the American factories that are working day and night; making all kind of guns to defeat the axis power. Americans were told to pay their taxes on time, but they never seen the effect of it. This film gave them a visual idea how the taxes they pay have a direct effect on war effort. It made Americans who used to skip their tax payment rethink about their relatives who were drafted to serve aboard; and submit
