Chapter 1 Units, Vectors, and Trigonometry
Physical Quantities Anything that can be measured (distance, mass, temperature, voltage, …) When we measure something we have to determine the dimensions and choose the units of that quantity, and see if it has a direction ( scalar or vector ) Most of the physics we will see in this course involve three BASIC dimensions: DISTANCE has the dimensions of LENGTH: [L] MASS has the dimensions of MASS: [M] TIME has the dimensions of TIME: [T] We can measure these dimensions in different units
SI Units [L]: meters, m [M]: kilograms, kg [T]: seconds, s These constitute three of the fundamental dimensions , but there are others you will meet, such as [Temperature], [Electric Charge], … We can also measure quantities in other units :- length in feet, time in days, mass in pounds etc…
