Abdulrahman SaibWednesday 7:00 p.m – 9:45 p.mLab Group 3MSE 227 Lab #9 – Corrosion of Metals
Abstract:Corrosion is an effect observed in our day to day lives. It can occur in pipes, nails, cars, any ironbased alloys will experience this dreaded fate. Once something corrodes it becomes obsolete as itloses not only its value, but the strength and hardness it once had. However, being armed withknowledge of electrochemistry, material science and corrosion can help prevent a large sum offinancial loss as well as good materials. For that reason the profession of corrosion engineeringcomes in a pinch as it focuses on the science and art of preventing or controlling corrosiondamage in a safe and economical fashion. In order to achieve the most optimal outcome, experimental research is needed. This is due to major aspects of the field being observable innature.Procedure:Two samples of 1018 steel and brass were given to run many tests on. The first given task was toperform the necessary dimension measurements using a caliper for the best possible and fairlyaccurate results. Afterwards the samples were to be buffed or grinded using two types of sandpaper, those being 400 grit and 600 grit for about 2 minutes each. The polishing processfollowed, that was achieved by two types of polishing solution, 1 micron and 0.5 micronpowders. The polishing process were to be performed for roughly 2 minutes each as well. Theymust then be placed under a microscope to assure that they have been finely polished. Observing
