Tattoos 2 Tattoos: The Good and Bad When acquiring a tattoo, many questions come into play. Will a tattoo affect their career? Will people think differently of them after acquiring a tattoo? These questions are relevant and should be answered before receiving a tattoo. Taking family and a career into consideration is very important in this decision making process, but one must also consider their own wants. There is a lot that goes with receiving a tattoo and being informed will help with making this decision. Tattoos are a form of art but can cause dangerous health risks. The attraction to tattoos varies by person. Some choose to acquire a tattoo because their friends see it as the cool thing to do. Others choose to receive a tattoo with a meaning behind it. The meaning behind the tattoo could be anything from the state they were raised in, to a memorial tattoo for a lost loved one. When a person chooses a tattoo with a meaning behind it, they are in their own way telling a story through their body art. Some like to have their home countries flag or colors tattooed on them to symbolize their heritage. Others choose hearts, butterflies, or even names that have a sentimental meaning to them. Everybody has their own beliefs when it comes to sentimental values, as Schweit (n.d.) stated “ So perhaps the attraction of tattoos in this day and age is not so much in their existence, but rather in the stories they tell.” (para. 4.) Deciding to acquire a tattoo takes a lot of consideration. Some think that after receiving a tattoo, there is a chance of becoming addicted to tattoos. Asking a person with a tattoo if they have more than one tattoo, more often than not the answer will be yes. A person with multiple tattoos does not mean they are addicted to tattoos. Addiction is a personality trait. According to Kandel (2006), “Addiction is a compulsion, something over which a person has no self control. Addiction cannot differentiate between a want and a need. Individuals who do have numerous addictions—drugs, alcohol, behaviors, etc.—can very well become addicted to tattoos” (para. 5).
