In the United States, more than 2 million children and adolescents (3.4%) younger than 18 years have experienced the death of a parent. Sudden deaths can be more difficult to deal with because you do not see it coming and it comes as more of a shock, whereas if a parent has an ongoing illness it may be easier to cope with because someone could talk you through it such as a family member or others who are going through the same problem. Here are some places to consider... Places to Go for Help Counseling Support Services Selfhelp groups for individuals to support one another Things you can do to cope with grieving Crying can with your siblings and/or parent and family members can help Keeping a diary or a journal Get something from your remaining parent or find something in memory of your deceased parent (keepsake, memento, emblem etc.) Get involved in the funeral and memorial service "the golden rule of this entire experience is...to get your feelings out there safely and find a person who[m] you feel comfortable talking with."
