1 MPET-asthma Asthma = a disorder of the airways, characterised by a hyperreactivity of the airways to a variety of stimuli 2 main characteristics: ü reversible airway obstruction ü allergic inflammatory reaction MPET-asthma Clinic ü Attacks of dyspnoe and wheezing ü Episodic: exacerbations interspersed with symptom free periods ü Can lead to persistent disease (= status asthmaticus) MPET-asthma Epidemiology ü Prevalence: 10-15% of children, 5% of adults ü 1/3 emergency admissions in children ü Mortality: 0.3/100 000/yr, increasing INCREASING INCIDENCE: hypothesis ü housing (isolation, heated bedrooms) ü virus ü new chemicals, air pollution ü hygiene hypothesis MPET-asthma Etiology ü multifactorial: genetic and environmental components ü heterogenous MPET-asthma Factors eliciting an attack ü Exercise: rapid breathing of dry cold air ü Infections ü Environment, pollution: ozone, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide ü Allergens ü Occupational hazards: dust, metal, solvent
