102G Prompt 3 The Special Importance of Ordinary Places: A Descriptive Essay Assignment To compose a descriptive essay that, using the materials of description, argues for “the special importance of ordinary places.” Justification We commonly think of argument as a primarily rational exercise in offering belief and the support for it. This support is usually verifiable and often quantifiable. Thus, for example, those who argue for nature protection on the basis of the “material discourse” have supported their belief that we should value nature for its material resources by providing cost-benefit analyses, projections of return on investment, and so forth. Yet as Susan Smith has indicated in “The Art of Rhetoric,”* arguments can appeal to their intended audiences for other-than-rational reasons. They can also appeal because they resonate with an intended audience’s values and its emotions.
