Alexander the Great By: Vaibhav Mokashi 1. How was Philip II of Macedon able to assemble one of history’s greatest military forces? Rich gold deposits found under Mr. Pangaeus. 2. At what famous battle and against whom did Philip demonstrate his military might? At the battle of Chaeronea near Thebes, Philip II crushed independent city states (Sparta, Athens, Thebes and Thrace). 3. What two factors allowed Philip II demonstrate his military might? The Phalanx formation and the strong support of the well trained cavalry. 4. What impact do you think Philip’s assassination had on Alexander’s character? Explain. The assassination may have made Alexander want to carry out Philip’s plan to invade Persia. It would have also made Alexander gain a stronger personality and a firsthand look at death which would be a common sight as a soldier. 5. What measures did Alexander use to consolidate power after Philip’s assassination? He murdered rivals and launched swift campaigns against Greek to demonstrate his military strength. He
