PSYC 4008 Test 3 Gustav Fechner: Came up with a type of PSYC where we can go and the lab and be technical, and empirical. His book (Elements of Psychophysics) published in 1860, marks the beginning of psychology as a science (according to Edwin G Boring) Believed that mind is something new, that you cannot directly measure o So the challenge for psych to be a science in substantial o But you can indirectly measure the mind, by manipulating measurable stimuli. In his book he presents some simple concept s about how he would present stimuli o Looking at mental change Absolute threshold- the minimum amount of a stimulus detected Differential threshold- minimum amount of difference we can detect How much has to be changed before we can tell its different 3 techniques for manipulation stimulus intensity Method of Limits - tae a sound that is quiet enough that it can’t be heard then raise it gradually until the person listening says they can hear it. o
