1. The word Qur’an most commonly associated with an Arabic word meaning “recit”. The Qur’an is composed of 114 suras or chapter, which accordingly have its own unique title. It is organized roughly from longest (2 nd ) to shortest sura (114 th ), not chronologically. Each sura begins, “In the name of Allah, the compassionate, the merciful.” It is written and preserved in Arabic. It is also considered to be classical Arabic. The aim of God through the Qur’an is guidance to the faithful. The Qur’an is believed to be literally God’s eternal word delivered by Angel Gabrielle to Muhammad. Muhammad’s revelations began around 610 CE, where he was commanded to recite the revelations, and ended in 632 CE. However, Muhammad could not read or write, thus his followers wrote them down. The Qur’an is roughly 4/5ths the size of the Christian Bible. An individual who can recite the entire Qur’an is known as a hafiz. 2.
