Lloyd Professor Fernandez IGE 120H Fall, 2008 Reader Response to Body Ritual among the Nacirema My initial response to Horace Minor’s “Body Ritual among the Nacirema,” was a perverse fascination with the more graphic descriptions of the body rituals preformed by the “Magical Practitioners” in Nacirema culture. During the second reading my fascination gave way to an interest in determining the main idea of Minor’s essay. It is my contention that Minor’s essay is a study of the international obsession with body image and its manifestations in different social, political, and economic institutions. Minor uses the extreme body rituals of the Nacirema group to illustrate how body obsession is manifested throughout the world on various different levels. When I read this essay, I drew parallels between the Nacirema group and my immediate environment, Los Angeles. This was not a difficult task because there was an abundance of similarities.
