Lloyd 1 S. Lloyd Professor Fernandez IGE 120H Fall, 2008 Reader Response to IGE Guidebook I was surprised by my positive response to the IGE Guidebook. At the risk of sounding cynical, I admit that I have developed an aversion to reading syllabi and guidebooks. I find them boring and I am just not interested in all the rhetoric and posturing. I view them as an academic formality and usually just scan the document for dates and unfamiliar concepts. But after our first class on Thursday, I decided to put aside my prejudice and approach the assignment with an open mind. After reading the first sentence of the introduction where it states, “Founded in 1983, the Interdisciplinary General Education Program (IGE) offers students a unique and stimulating choice to fulfill their general education requirements,” (1) I felt my cynicism was justified. This sentence sounded generic, like a personal statement where the writer begins with, “My name is… and I was born in…” I was not looking forward to sixteen more pages.
