GEOG 1F91 – Physical Geography – Mid­Latitude and High­Latitude Climates npilger@brocku.ca The mid­latitude climates extend from the mid­latitudes into land areas in the subtropical zone throughout the world, and into the subarctic zone for areas in western Europe. Overview The mid­latitude climates zone is not equally distributed like the low­latitude climates, and nearly all of this climate zone is situated in the northern hemisphere . In the southern hemisphere, the land area above 40 deg. S, is so small that the climates are heavily influenced by the great southern oceans (Pacific, and Atlantic) and do not develop the continental characteristics of their counterparts in the northern hemisphere

GEOG 1F91 – Physical Geography – Mid­Latitude and High­Latitude Climates npilger@brocku.ca Overview Mid­latitude Climates : Climates in this zone are affected by two different air­masses. The tropical air­masses are moving towards the poles and the polar air­masses are moving towards the equator. These two air masses are in constant conflict. Either air mass may dominate the area, but neither has exclusive control. Weather systems, such as travelling low pressure systems and their associated fronts, characteristically move from west to east ( mid­latitude cyclones ).

GEOG 1F91 – Physical Geography – Mid­Latitude and High­Latitude Climates npilger@brocku.ca The Dry Subtropical Climate Köppen BWh, BWk, BSh, Bsk Subtropical Desert and Steppe Dominated by Continental Tropical air masses all year. This climate type covers 12 percent of all land area on the continents. The heart of the tropical desert climate is found near the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, usually toward the western side of the continents.
