Olivia Figaretti Gerontology 212 Assignment #5 For this assignment I decided to interview my grandpa. My grandpa is 76 years old and is in such good health for someone his age. He has grown up in Bellaire, Ohio, married at 23 and had eleven children; one which being my mom. Soon after he was married, at age 24, my grandpa had his first child. His life consisted of work, coming home and continuing to do tasks around the house and take care of all eleven children. From the beginning of making his family, my grandpa and grandma remained living in the same house that they live in today. He has never had any major geographic moves in his life. From a young boy he remained living around the same area. He continued his education through high school but did not go to college. One of his major life transitions was retirement. He said, “My whole life I’ve always been so busy doing some job, then all of a sudden I did not have that responsibility.” It seems as though, from my point of view, that he has coped well from this transition. He remained active by fixing up the house, working on cars, and doing whatever he could do around the house to keep him busy. The way he made it seem to me was that even though he missed working, he was also happy and knew that it was time to retire. It’s not like he went into any major depression or things changed
