Situation=red; prob=black; resolution=green Mary Louis Pratt, in her essay “The Arts of the Contact Zone,” defines contact zones as, “social spaces where cultures meet clash, and grapple with each other, often in contexts of highly asymmetrical relations of power, such as colonialism, slavery or their aftermaths as they are lived out in many parts of the world today” (501). These cultural conflicts can often be identified by certain characteristics of oppression, including discrimination and violence enacted by the dominate culture towards a minority culture; the dominate culture has more political power than the minority has, and, in many cases, the minority reacts to this oppression. Those reactions can be violent themselves, as when the English conquered the Irish and they rebelled through the organizations of the Sinn Finn and the Irish Republican Army (IRA).
