Jamie Mortakis Dr. Lisa Wellinghoff English 102 16 September 2008 In Rich Rodriguez’s “Achievement of Desire” and John Berger’s “Ways of Seeing” both authors demonstrate critical reading and seeing, as well as a loss of their past. Another big part of the authors’ stories is nostalgia. The student in school and the student of art both have their own way of reading and seeing different things. It depends on how they are taught to do these actions. With today’s education some people are replications of a scholarship boy and with today’s media some people are mystified by it all. In Berger, he talks about how “every image embodies a way of seeing; our perception or appreciation of an image depends also upon our own way of seeing” (Berger 99). If a person is looking at a piece of art because of how much it costs, or the fame of the author, they are not really taking the art in for what it is. A work of art needs to be looked at as a work of beauty. In Rodriguez he talks about how he was the scholarship boy that Hoggart described. Rodriguez read
